BASF Opens New Construction Technology Center in Mumbai, India

Mumbai, India – 30 August 2012 – In an effort to further strengthen its strong customer-orientation and develop and offer innovative solutions to the construction industry customers in South Asia, BASF today announced the opening of a new Construction Technology Center in Mumbai, India. The Center will support the development and testing of new applications for concrete admixtures, cement additives, waterproofing, flooring systems, precision grouts, concrete repair and protection products, amongst others. 

Dr. Thomas Kloster, Vice President, BASF Construction Chemicals Asia Pacific, officiated the inaugural ceremony along with senior management of BASF India, and key customers and employees from the Construction Chemicals division. “The investment in the Mumbai technical center is part of our global strategy to focus on innovation and sustainability,” said Dr. Kloster in his address to the participants at the opening ceremony. “The new center will support joint development with customers for new product applications and formulations, providing an excellent venue for enterprises in the sub-region to embrace world-class, cutting-edge technologies in partnership with BASF’s technical professionals,” he added. 

Located in close proximity to the manufacturing facility in Navi Mumbai, the newly constructed technical centre is a state-of-the-art laboratory facility occupying an area of 5000 square feet. The facility houses several pieces of equipment that will help increase BASF’s capabilities to both develop and test new products. These include a concrete rheometer, high capacity compression testing machine, equipment to measure durability properties of concrete and a micro calorimeter to develop new cement additives. 

The site also incorporates a training center, where BASF’s team will impart knowledge on the applicability and testing of new products to contractors and applicators 

The inauguration of the Mumbai technical center will further strengthen the research and development network of BASF’s Construction Chemicals division in Asia Pacific. The division now operates 5 technical centers in the Asia Pacific region, Japan, Australia, Singapore, China and India. In India, the division operates production sites in Navi Mumbai, Mangalore, Nalagarh, Kolkata and Bangalore, 

BASF’s Construction Chemicals division is the leading supplier of chemical systems and formulations for the construction industry. The division operates production sites and sales centers in more than 60 countries and achieved sales of about €2.2 billion with approximately 7,000 employees in 2011

BASF in India has 2,070 employees, nine production sites and two R&D centers that work closely with BASF’s Global Technology platform. In 2011, BASF in India registered sales of €1.2 billion.
