Akamai Technologies to Open New Operation Center in Costa Rica in 2014

- New Center to create over 50 jobs in programming and web development

San Jose – 15 November 2012 – Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading American company helping enterprises provide secure, high-performing user experiences on any device through its Akamai Intelligent Platform™, announced the opening of its new operation center in Costa Rica in 2014. From this new operation center in Costa Rica, Akamai will cover markets including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, and provide customer support across the Americas. The new center is slated to create over 50 jobs in programming and web development through the end of 2014.

Over the past 12 months, Akamai has experienced considerable growth in the demand for its global platform in Latin America, which already operates in more than 62 cities in the region. Today, Akamai is currently powering 13 out of the top 15 Brazilian retail websites, 3 out of 5 of the largest banks in Brazil, and has served as a force behind major online events, for regional broadcasters, including the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.

The services sector is transforming the country´s economic structure. “The development that this sector has undergone during this last decade has been rapid and has caused a deep impact. In 2000 barely five services companies had established in Costa Rica, while in 2012 we have more than 113. Last year, the services sector represented 68% of the country´s GDP, 32% of the exports and generated more than 140,000 jobs. We are satisfied with Akamai Technology´s decision, which reassures our credibility as an attractive location to expand and outsource services in the Americas” highlighted Foreign Trade Minister, Anabel Gonz├ílez.

According to CINDE´s Director General, Gabriela Llobet, Akamai is joining a sector which has been positively evolving over time. “Companies that operate in Costa Rica have been upgrading to more sophisticated processes that require technical knowledge and specific abilities. This new Akamai center is an excellent example. From this location in Costa Rica, Akamai will be providing customer service and technical support for clients all over the Americas who are using their highly sophisticated technology platform.”

According to Jim Ebzery, Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Americas, “the location of our Costa Rica center allows us to tap into a very skilled pool of local talent to expand the ranks of our world-class services and support team. We believe this initiative will set us up to better service the Americas as a region. Our goal is to enable enterprises to leverage cloud, mobile, media and data strategies, all while addressing the security challenges inherent in today’s hyperconnected world.”
