02 January 2013 - Leading international law firm SJ Berwin announced today that it has launched an office in Luxembourg. The decision to open in Luxembourg is driven by SJ Berwin’s commitment to enter markets which are significant to its clients and Luxembourg is an increasingly important jurisdiction for many of its clients.

The office will be launched by partners Alexandrine Armstrong-Cerfontaine and Geoffrey Scardoni and focus on Corporate, Finance, Private Equity, Funds and Tax

Alexandrine, appointed as the managing partner of the Luxembourg office, launched Armstrong Cerfontaine Avocats in Luxembourg in 2009, prior to which she worked for Allen & Overy in London, Paris and Luxembourg. Her practice focuses on advising private equity sponsors on their investments, corporate finance, syndicated financings and fund formation, including leveraged financing and restructurings. She is regularly invited to lecture in France.

Geoffrey will join from the Luxembourg Tax practice of Loyens & Loeff. He specialises in international tax law, focusing on cross-border financial products, securitisations, private equity, venture capital and other funds and investments, mergers and takeovers and international corporate structuring. He also is a lecturer at the University of Luxembourg where he teaches tax law.

Jean-Noel Lequeue will join as a consultant. Jean-Noel has a wealth of experience advising professionals in the financial sector and management companies, including supporting them in complying with the Luxembourg regulatory compliance environment. Jean-Noel is the Chairman of the Association Luxembourgeoise des Compliance Officers (ALCO).

Martin Brockhausen, a senior associate in the SJ Berwin Funds team is re-locating to Luxembourg from Munich to support the Funds team in Luxembourg.

From this initial start, further lawyers will be appointed to the office in the coming months, in addition to the team brought by Alexandrine Armstrong-Cerfontaine.

Stephen Kon, Senior Partner at SJ Berwin, said: “Opening an office in Luxembourg is consistent with our international expansion to date. Luxembourg is already an important jurisdiction for many of our clients, with most pan-European funds and continental European domestic funds having some part of their structure there. This growing importance of Luxembourg meant it was an obvious choice for SJ Berwin, to ensure we continue to offer our clients the very best service.”

Alexandrine Armstrong-Cerfontaine said: “Geoffrey and I believe that we are very fortunate to work with a group of very talented people and by joining forces with SJ Berwin, we will offer an exceptional platform for our Corporate, Finance, Private Equity, Funds and Tax practices. The opening of SJ Berwin in Luxembourg, a world class platform for investment banks and investment funds, will provide a unique opportunity for our clients to benefit from a seamless service in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Brussels, China and the UAE.”
