Zimmer CAS Inaugurates New Production Unit in Montréal, Canada

Montréal – 26 July 2013 – Zimmer CAS today inaugurated its new production unit in Montréal, Canada. A subsidiary of Zimmer Holdings since 2007, Zimmer CAS (formerly OrthoSoft) designs and develops computer-assisted solutions that offer surgeons an unparalleled degree of precision for knee, shoulder and hip implant surgery.

Jeff McCaulley, President of the Reconstructive Division of Zimmer Holdings and Dr. Louis-Philippe Amiot, General Manager at Zimmer CAS, presented two new technologies at the event that now offer surgeons around the world an unparalleled degree of precision and simplicity for knee and shoulder implant surgery.

In the same production unit, Zimmer CAS also produces personalized instruments that are placed directly on the patient’s bones to guide cutting. “This second product is used for knee and shoulder implants. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) taken before the surgery enables us to provide the surgeon with an instrument that is perfectly adapted to the patient. The operation is quicker and more precise. This technology complements our current product line-up and enables us to reach a greater number of surgeons,” added Dr. Amiot.

Élie Farah, Vice President Investment Greater Montréal at Montréal International said he was very proud that his team has been able to contribute to this expansion project which has enabled the company to double its workforce. “The success of Zimmer CAS enhances the attractiveness of Greater Montréal and the province of Québec among international life sciences and health technologies industry leaders, and in so doing, fosters the development of a key strategic sector for our region,” said Farah. “Research and innovation are two key components of Greater Montréal’s competitiveness and prosperity.”

With more than 43,000 people employed by some 600 private companies, including 150 public and university research organizations, Greater Montréal’s life sciences and health technologies (LSHT) industry enjoys an international status.
